The Jesuit Social Center Tokyo Migrants’ Desk, although recently established, is the fruit of long years of direct service of individual Jesuits in Japan to the disadvantaged sectors in Japanese society. Programs initially to help the poor and to assist refugees eventually developed into programs for migrants. Japan had become a more attractive destination for foreign workers yet had no system to protect their rights.
The Migrants’ Desk through its network of lawyers thus provides free legal assistance to migrants who have mishaps with Japanese law, including but limited to immigration concerns.
The Migrants’ Desk also regularly conducts visits to detention centers to monitor the welfare of migrants and provide legal advice, if needed.
The Desk likewise organizes seminars for migrants that facilitate their integration into Japanese society as well as technical classes to develop skills that may help migrants secure a stable means of income.
